Meet : Olivio J. Clay, PhD
Home: Birmingham, AL
How do you serve your community?
I serve the community via projects with my African-inspired fraternity, Nasiha Roho Adinasi Fraternity, Inc. and through my role as leader of the Community Outreach, Diversity & Inclusion (CODI) Core of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Alzheimer’s Disease Center.
What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about reducing health disparities and ensuring that minorities are included in research. I am also passionate about training students, whether it’s in my lab or in the classroom. I think we need to have new, fresh approaches to teaching. For example, during the Spring 2020 semester I taught PSY 320: Psychology of Trap Music.
What is your favorite quote?
“So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.”
Matthew 20:16
What was the last book you read? Who is the author?
I just reread The Cashflow Quadrant by Robert T. Kiyosaki.
What song lyrics speak to your heart?
It doesn’t necessarily speak to my heart, but a song that motivates me when I need an extra push to get going is “Hustle Hard”, by Ace Hood.
What do you like most about Asheville? Or what is your connection to Asheville?
My connection to Asheville is through one of the hosts of the Asheville View, Aisha Adams. Years ago, my friends and I co-hosted a poetry event in Birmingham called “Soul Fusion”. Aisha shared her poetry with us at a couple of events.
What’s your favorite place in Asheville? Why?
Unfortunately I have not visited Asheville, but hopefully soon to visit the Biltmore.
Tell us about one of your favorite moments on the show, or share a funny story about one of the hosts.
My favorite moment on the show was the episode that discussed diversity, equity, and inclusion. A funny story about one of the hosts: back when we hosted the poetry event, one of my friends asked me, “Who is that girl that is always dancing?” It was Aisha Adams, lol.
Why should people connect with The Asheville View?
People should connect with the Asheville View because they deliver information from different viewpoints and cover a wide range of topics. Segments like “Ask The Doctor” add meaningful information to the topics covered in each episode.
